Tamnamore BESS (Phase 1)

We are excited to present plans for the proposed development of a new battery energy storage system (BESS) at the electricity substation at Drumkee Road in Tamnamore, County Tyrone. The proposal, which is being brought forward on behalf of renewable energy company Heron Energy, is for a 78MW BESS facility and associated infrastructure.

The site for the proposed BESS is ideal as it is in close proximity to the NIE substation, which is part of the electrical transmission and distribution system. Placing the BESS near a substation can reduce transmission and distribution losses and relieve congestion on the grid. Locating a BESS on this proposed site will ensure renewable energy generation is being maximised whilst having minimal visual impact due to its relatively rural setting.

Energy Storage: What It Is and Why It Matters

Northern Ireland is committed to sourcing 80% of its electricity from renewable energy by 2030 – a vital step for addressing the climate crisis and enhancing energy security. To meet this target, battery storage is key to maximising the use of solar and wind power, ensuring that renewable energy generation is fully utilised.

BESS act as a bridge between green energy supplies and electricity demand. By storing energy generated during peak production and releasing it when needed most, these systems optimise renewable energy usage, reduce waste, and enhance grid stability.

In addition to enabling efficient energy storage, BESS sites help manage curtailment – reducing energy output to balance supply and demand or address grid limitations. By supporting local solar and wind power, energy storage ensures a more sustainable, reliable, and efficient electricity system for Northern Ireland’s future.
