Bann Battery

The Bann Battery project is a groundbreaking initiative; one of the first battery energy storage systems (BESS) to secure planning approval on the island of Ireland. Situated in Banbridge, the facility represents a vital step forward in securing Ireland’s energy future. By integrating grid-scale batteries, the project addresses the growing need for reliable energy storage, enabling renewable energy sources like wind and solar to power communities even during periods of low generation.

Battery energy storage is essential for achieving a decarbonised electricity system. The Bann Battery supports DS3 system services, allowing for efficient energy storage during production curtailments and providing stability to the grid. This capability maximises the use of renewable energy, reduces dependence on fossil fuels, and aligns with Northern Ireland’s ambitious target to generate 80% of electricity from renewable sources by 2030.

As fossil fuel plants phase out and renewable energy capacity expands, projects like Bann Battery play a critical role in ensuring grid reliability and advancing sustainability goals. Heron Energy, a subsidiary of the esteemed Heron Group, demonstrates its expertise and commitment through this innovative facility, which embodies the transition toward a cleaner, more secure energy future for Northern Ireland.
